Media expert against AIDS

From March 25th to 30th 2008, African journalists from 24 countries attended the first conference on AIDS in western and central Africa. The network of professionals of Media and Arts Committed in the struggle against AIDS (REPMASCI) invited African journalists to think about media contribution against this disease.

African media want to take part in the struggle against AIDS. The Ivorian Minister of the struggle against AIDS, Ms Christine Nébout Adjobi encouraged the participants and said: “more than 90% people in Côte d’Ivoire don’t know their serologic status. About the specific case of Côte d’Ivoire, only 8% of the population ha had an HIV test. We are waiting for more results of our labour. Your dynamism will prompt many others to action because the other sectors still are late”.

For Mr. Bamba Youssouf, the President of REPMASCI, this conference is not the first one in Africa. It has learned from errors and weakness of the past for a strong coalition of African media against Aids. It creates a favorable environment for the prevention of the disease.

Doctor Hortense Gbaguidi-Niamké, the representant of Nana Tanko, executive director of OSIWA noted that media broadcast information which influence attitudes, behaviors and political decisions. She said: “we need media as change forces for a social behavior change encounter the pandemic disease but also for a change conception of Aid’’. Mr. Nicolas Demey reiterated the agreement of United Nations to support all the actors of the struggle, particularly media, to stop together the spread of Aid and to inverse the present trend.
